Communication Styles Presentation
This presentation is about leading the team members to discover how they and the other team members like to give and receive information from one another. It could also be viewed as a presentation on communication styles.
Thoughts for the facilitator: Each of us has our own communication style or way of interacting and communicating with one another. We differ in many ways: How we want to give and receive information from others. How we like to approach tasks that we have been given. Our socialization needs. Whether we just have to find and offer creative solutions. Whether we need to understand the big picture before we get started on something. Whether we need to lead or plan things out before we exert effort. All of this works together to produce different needs for giving and receiving information.
Out of this cauldron of differences boils inevitable conflict and misunderstanding. Team members dont like one another and they can not explain why. They notice that certain good and pleasant people irritate them. They notice that they are drawn to others and can not explain why. This presentation goes a long way towards creating respect, appreciation, and cooperation between individuals with different communication styles. In fact it is highly effective in improving all human interactions: families, friends, peers, bosses, as well as fellow team members. The trick is to learn about the different communication styles and how to identify the styles of others. If you are Meyers-Briggs Personality Inventory trained, Communication Styles will look somewhat similar. However, Communication Styles is a great deal easier to explain and teach. Anyone can learn this system and can immediately apply it without requiring everyone around them to complete the inventory. An added bonus is that you do not need to be certified to deliver this presentation. |
Starting Assumptions:
The team is seated theater style with or without tables facing an overhead projector with screen
There is a pen or pencil for each person
Copies of the Communication Styles Presentation have been prepared for each person.
Action Step HPT-5: Present Communication Styles |
Presentation of Communication Styles is very straightforward: You simply deliver the information that is on the collection of overhead slides. Even so, the presentation can be improved by doing several additional things:
Before you give the presentation to the team, give it to your close friends and family. This should provide plenty of personal examples that you can interject along the way.
Ive found it useful to point out somewhere in the presentation that this is not a compatibility inventory that suggests that some people should get divorced or stop seeing each other. The way around the apparent conflicts is to develop an appreciation for the positive aspects of the others style and recognize that it fills a blind spot you may have.
Ive also found that its useful to enlarge the communication styles chart and have each person place a colored dot on their spot. This chart can then be posted in the team area to act as a reminder of the styles of the other team members.
Finally, I believe its healthy to encourage team members to take the inventory home and administer it to friends and family who are interested. The slides are completely self-explanatory and do not depend on a persons presentation delivery capabilities.

About the Communication Styles Presentation
This is a well-proven, highly interactive presentation that is complete and ready to deliver. Successful delivery of this one and a half hour course is NOT dependent on the skill of the presenter. The presentation clearly and simply explains that each of us has one of four major communication styles: Director, Socializer, Relator, Thinker. Each of these can be further divided into four substyles for a total of 16 substyles. Communication styles telegraph how we like to give and receive information. The student learns that some communication styles naturally irritate those with other styles, but that each style is essential for the team to be successful. Students use an individual inventory to identify their own styles. They also learn how to identify the communication styles of others and techniques for presenting information so that it is more easily accepted by those with other styles. Most importantly, students come to understand that the full range of communication styles needs to be represented for the team to be successful.
The philosophy is based on Tony Alessandra and Michael OConners 1996 book, The Platinum Rule. Those familiar with DISC or Meyers-Briggs will find similarities, although we believe this presentation is more easily understood and applied. It has proven to be suitable for audiences ranging from the executive suite to the loading dock and everyone in between.
This is a four-color 38-foil presentation that is presented in MS PowerPoint. It is designed for use as an overhead foil presentation together with a 60-page student handout.
